Hockey Traditions

There are so many reason that Hockey is my favorite sport, but tradition has to be at the top.

Never touch any trophy other than the Stanley Cup.

When a player gets traded, then plays that team he will put a money amount on the blackboard for any teammate that scores the winning goal to beat his old team. (I wouldn't doubt if this tradition was in one way or another, part of every sport.)

As a rookie, live (typically in the basement) with a veteran. These multi-millionaires have more than enough money to afford their own place, but the sport is bigger than the money. This has to have so many benefits, but I like to think of the benefits to the children of the host family. "Uncle Holmstrom is funny."

Red Wings Traditions:

Father/Son trip

Nobody makes more than the Captain. What a testiment to the love of the sport. This was never more clear than recently when Marion Hossa not only turned down a long term deal from other teams, but then accepted a smaller one year salary ... because no player makes more than the Captain, Nikki Lindstrom. I love it - to me it's like this: Lindstrom is probably (definitely) the best defensive player ever to the play the game and if he is good to play for that amount, everbody else should be as well.

And, of course, the tradition of each member of the winning team getting the Cup for a day. The stories are incredible!

The Traditions Survive from Generation to Generation.
